This free week long program for students entering grades 9-12 provides an introduction to careers in law enforcement. Our Youth Police Academy meets for a week each summer. A variety of locations are used to host the program including Beacon High School, City Hall, and the Beacon Police Station. Field trips include visits to local training and emergency centers and professionals and volunteers will share their experiences in these careers. This is always a fun experience for all. The goal of the academy is to help participating youth understand the role police officers play in the community, job duties performed and requirements of becoming a police officer. In addition, the program fosters relationships between the officers and the youth participants. This is accomplished with mock situations and lectures, field trips, physical fitness exercises, and games. Additional opportunities for training have been added to our program in Stop the Bleed and Narcan for participants. Our instructors include Beacon City Police Officers as well as Police Officers who reside within the City of Beacon, participating as volunteers. All instructors are certified and well-trained in their areas of instruction/expertise.
